Oh! The Joys of Having a Little Girl!

For some reason, throughout my pregnancy, my hubby and I strongly felt we’ll be having a baby boy. Probably because 99/100 aunties (aka ‘Gender Predictors’) said I’ll be having a boy and also because several times I came across passages in the Bible where the angel announced, “And… Thou shalt have a son!” Later a dear friend of mine told me that nowhere in the Bible did the angel announce a baby girl’s birth!

But on that night of May 7th, 2010, when I overheard the doctors discussing “F, 02:25 am!” I so wanted to jump off the operation table and dance! Want to know the first thing that ran in my head? – Yay! Now I can dress her up! Doll her up! And… Shop! Shop! Shop!

Having a little girl is high maintenance! But then again, that’s what makes it so much (for at least the mommies!). There are certain things that only a little girl can enjoy. For eg,

> The Clothes – Trust me! The day my little girl arrived, I forgot shopping for myself! I just can’t move myself past the girl’s section in a store! My! My! The variety they have is just endless – the frocks, the skirts, mini-skirts, shorts, tees, stalkings, the jeans with glitter, embroidery and what not! Wish I was into fashion; I could have given you a longer list. I am just a Tiruchi girl and this is all I could classify the clothes.

> Well, not just the clothes… Even the Colors! Girls are not restricted to just blues and browns (Oops! Forgot to mention – black and white!). For me, more than the type of dress, it’s the color that makes it so irresistible! Your hands itch to buy almost everything you see! Ask my hubby and he’ll tell you how tough it’s for him to drag me out of a store without making him pay!

> Accessories that match the clothes – I remember, when I was a child, my mom was working and she barely had time to even cook, forget styling my hair! So most of my school and college years I always had short hair. But when I had my daughter, I made sure I’ll pamper her with all the girly attention she needs!

The clips and bands you find for girls… Phew! They’re soooooooo cute and so tiny that hubby has no idea when I shop them 😉

Combing her hair is just not as easy as you think. A pony-tail is harder. Hair clips don’t survive a minute on her head. Hair bands end up on the floor! But still, I just love seeing her in a kudumi. At the moment, only a uchi-kudumi and reta-kudumi are possible! However, I am growing her hair 🙂

Yes, all that I’ve mentioned is fun. Just superficial fun. There’s something more deeper and special in having a daughter. An Irish saying goes like this, ‘A son is a son till he takes him a wife, a daughter is a daughter all of her life!’  Growing up, my mom has always been (and always will be) my best friend and confidant. I can already see a similar bond growing between me and my little girl. Some day she might outgrow my lap… But never my heart!

Even as I am writing this, my heart goes out to the thousands of female infants who are still found dumped in trash and the unborn fetuses that are continued to be sniffed in the womb in our country. Only God should open the eyes of such cruel parents to see the joy and blessing wrapped up in a baby girl!
